Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent Brian McDonald and Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek will join PUSD board members, representatives from the City of Pasadena and community organizations, students, families, teachers, and staff at a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration of the new sports complex at Marshall Fundamental Secondary School on Friday, December 16.
“The new sports complex delivers enhanced opportunities for the students of Marshall Fundamental to develop intellectually, socially, and physically into graduates prepared for college and careers,” said Superintendent McDonald. “The new facilities support the concurrent pursuit of excellence in academics and athletics that will lead to the formation of future generations of well-rounded students ready to lead us into the 21st century.”
The $11.5 million 24,500 square foot sports complex includes a 12,300 square foot gymnasium area with three full-size basketball courts, team rooms, restrooms, storage, classrooms, and administrative offices. Facilities include six new tennis courts. Construction upgrades were also made to the school’s existing gymnasium and its dance studios, locker rooms, and classrooms.
The December 16 celebration will begin with an open air market at 3 p.m., featuring food sales by student clubs and Eagle wear sold by the Marshall Athletics Boosters. Raffles and silent auction items are planned by Marshall’s PTSA. The celebration continues with varsity basketball games starting at 5 p.m.
“We are grateful to the community for their support of Marshall. This regal building is a symbol of our strong traditions and our promising future,” said Marshall principal Dr. Mark Anderson.
Marshall serves more than 2,000 students in grades 6-12 and currently fields more than 20 active sports teams including football, basketball, volleyball, cross country, tennis, soccer, golf, baseball, softball, and track and field.
Construction of the sports complex was funded by Measure TT, the $350 million school bond initiative approved by voters in 2008. More information on Measure TT can be found at www.measurett.org.
The project was designed by ML Architects with the Nazerian Group as the general contractor.
Grand Opening of Marshall Fundamental School Sports Complex will be held Friday, Dec. 16, 2016. The event will start with an Open Air Market at 3:00 p.m. and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be at 4:15 p.m. followed by a Girls Varsity basketball game at 5:00 p.m. and a Boys Varsity basketball game at 7:00 p.m.
